A domestic contract (known informally as a "pre-nup") is a legal agreement between two parties in a family relationship. The contract outlines their rights and their responsibilities to each other. Domestic contracts can be entered into when a couple is cohabiting or getting married or separating.

Common-law relationships are becoming the preference of more and more people in today's day and age rather than a marriage. 

Any couple who lives together with no immediate plans to marry can enter into a cohabitation agreement that sets out their rights as well as legally protecting them both in the event of a relationship breakdown. It is strongly recommended that an unmarried couple with an asset such as a home enter into a cohabitation agreement.
